"For over a thousand generations the Jedi were the guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy. Before the Dark Times. Before the Empire" -Obi-Wan Kenobi
Much like the Jedi, the office of the Sheriff has been in existence as a peace-keeping and justice-related position for over a thousand generations, since 871 A.D.
Originally termed "shire-reeve" it was an English position to enforce the Kings Orders. The office was transported to the US in 1634, for the Shire of Northampton, Virginia.
In my family, I know of (at least) three previous generations of my family that have served in law enforcement - Sheriff's, Texas Rangers, and Deputy's, - and I am proud to continue that tradition.
