Internet Safety resources for parents and kids

One of the best resources for internet safety is provided by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Not only do they have wonderful information and statistics on the prevalence of these crimes, and crime types, but interactive games and resources for keeping kids safe.

The Internet Crimes Against Children Task Forces are a a series of state, local and federal agencies combining resources and manpower to investigate online offenses, rescue children and prosecute offenders. In addition they team with other entities to bring training and awareness to online dangers and safety for children, parents and educators. The link below will bring you to a list of resources, separated by type, to provide additional tools and resources.

One of the most inspiring people I have ever heard is Alicia Kozak. At 13 Alicia was abducted by an internet predator who "friended" her online. She was brutally abused for days before being rescued by the FBI. He story is both terrifying and inspiring.

Most expect sexual abuse to occur from the "stranger" lurking in a park, or creepy van. But more often it is someone known to the child- family, friends, or increasingly, "friends" met online. What signs should you be looking for? The National Network to End Child Abuse (UK) put out this wonderful infographic on signs to look for.
